- External exam: the clinician looks at the vulva for irritation, sores or other changes.
- Speculum exam: a speculum gently opens the vaginal walls so the cervix can be seen. Pap or HPV samples are collected with a small brush.
- Bimanual exam: with two gloved fingers inside the vagina and the other hand on your abdomen, the clinician checks the size and tenderness of the uterus and ovaries.
