A pelvic exam usually has three parts: an external exam; a speculum exam, where a speculum gently opens the vaginal walls so the cervix can be seen and a Pap or HPV sample taken; and a bimanual exam, where the clinician places two gloved fingers in the vagina and presses on the abdomen to feel the uterus and ovaries.
