What Is the RBT Exam?
RBTs work directly with clients, often children with autism, carrying out behavior plans, collecting data and teaching skills. The RBT exam checks that you understand the core ABA concepts and ethical rules behind that work.

The exam has 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored, 10 unscored) with 90 minutes to finish. The 3rd edition content outline groups tasks into these areas:

- Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Pass a background check.
- Complete a 40-hour RBT training program that meets BACB requirements.
- Pass the Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor.
- Apply to the BACB, then schedule and pass the RBT exam.
How to Pass the RBT Exam
- Know your definitions: positive vs. negative reinforcement and punishment are the most commonly confused topics.
- Learn the measurement types: frequency, duration, latency, IRT, partial and whole interval, and momentary time sampling.
- Understand verbal operants: mand, tact, echoic and intraverbal.
- Remember your scope: RBTs implement plans; they don’t design them.

After the RBT Exam: Supervision and Renewal
