The CFP exam is a computer-based test given by CFP Board at Prometric test centers, with remote proctoring offered in some windows. It tests whether you can integrate knowledge across the whole financial planning process, not just recall facts. Many questions are case studies where you analyze a client’s situation and recommend what to do.
Passing the exam is one of four requirements. To use the CFP® marks you also need a bachelor’s degree plus required coursework (Education), 6,000 hours of professional experience or 4,000 hours through the apprenticeship path (Experience), and agreement to CFP Board’s Code of Ethics (Ethics).
