📈 USA CFP Exam

How long should I study for the CFP exam?

Short answer

Most candidates study about 250–300+ hours over roughly three months.

How to Study for the CFP Exam (12-Week Plan)

  1. Weeks 1–6 — Review each domain. Work through your review course by domain, starting with Retirement, Investments and Tax.
  2. Weeks 7–9 — Practice questions. Do 50–100 questions a day, focusing on case studies. Track your weak topics.
  3. Weeks 10–11 — Mock exams. Take at least two full 170-question mock exams under timed conditions.
  4. Week 12 — Review. Go back over formulas (time value of money, retirement needs, education funding) and ethics rules.

Pro tip

Learn your financial calculator’s cash-flow and time-value-of-money functions until they’re automatic. Speed on the calculator frees up time for the long case studies.
