FINRA introduced the SIE in 2018 to test general securities knowledge separately from job-specific “top-off” exams. Once you pass the SIE and are sponsored by a firm, you take a representative exam such as the Series 7 (general securities), Series 6 (investment company products), Series 79 or Series 82.
Because no sponsorship is required, many college students and career changers take the SIE to stand out to employers.
